Description
Update 03/05/2008: To be honest, due to personal reasons, I tend to shutdown this project. But a large number of requests from users still keep comming every day, so I decide to restart it. Please hold on while I'm catching up with rPath technologies. Maybe Kiosk Appliance will be release in the next week or two. Thanks for your interests.
Update 07/04/2007: I move (again) the project's homepage to Launchpad. Please help to report bugs, request features or ask questions!
Update 04/04/2007: Kiosk Appliance 0.5, which will be released in the next couple of days, should allow you to customize your Kiosk Appliance! Changing default homepage URL or re-branding the whole appliance will be like a breeze! Stay tuned!
I'm also looking for someone to write the documentation. If you like to join this promising project, contact me now!
Update 02/04/2007: I move the project's homepage to Google.
Introduction
The Kiosk Appliance allows users to build browser-based information display kiosk which are useful and often seen in Internet cafes, libraries, galleries and museums, educational institutions, municipal offices, visitor information booths, conferences, shopping malls, airports---in short any location where simple, easy access to information is desirable. Included is just enough rPath Linux and FVWM to run a locked down version of Firefox. Firefox is also pre-configured to automatically reset after each used so that personal information is never stored permanently.
Getting started
Download one of the live CD images and boot it. No login or password is required, the live CD will boot directly into FVWM and automatically start Firefox in full-screen mode. It also ensures that: 1) Firefox is the only application running; 2) That's the only application that can be run. We also provide installable CD/DVD.
